Welcome to the Ashby Ivanhoe Chess Club website. We meet on Thursday evenings from 19:30 onwards at the Ivanhoe Social Club, Wilfred Place, Ashby, LE65 2GW. The latest standings in the David Reynolds Cup have now been published and can be viewed here or from the tab at the top of the page.
To qualify for inclusion in the standings you must have played at least 4 league matches by this point in the season and 8 games by the end of the season.
As there are no more league matches before the end of December, the next standngs will be published at the end of January 2025.
Many congratulations to James Foster on winning the Club U1450 Championship after beating Mick Brown in last night's Final.
Ashby 4 concluded their 2024 fixtures with a 2-2 draw at Braunstone 2 last night. A win for Ric Dawson on board 3, plus draws on boards 2 and 4 from Mick Brown and Paul Mayer, gave us a share of the points.
If any of you are still using an older iPhone, such as an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, then you should be aware that these will not be able to run WhatsApp after the 5th May 2025. This is because running WhatsApp on iPhones will require you to be running version iOS 15.1 or later of the Operating System, and the aforementioned devices are unable to upgrade to this.
Ashby 3 and Ashby 5 both concluded their 2024 fixtures with defeats last night.
Ashby 3 were roundly beaten 3.5 - 0.5 by Wigston 3, with a draw from Tom on board 1 to ensure that we just got a pasting but not a whitewash !! At this point we'll gloss over the decorating puns 😀
Ashby 5 had a much closer game, going down by 3.5 - 2.5 against Anstey 6. James Foster continued his run of good form with a win on board 5 and there was also a good win for Peter Anderton on board 6. A draw for Ric on board 2 was not enough, unfortunately, to get us anythng out of the match.
Elsewhere, in the Club Championship, Paul Gibson beat reigning Champion, Richard Vann, to draw level with Patrick Buckley at the top of the leader board. We now await the game between Patrick and Les Fancourt. A draw or win for Patrick will make him the new Club Champion. A win for Les would send us into a 3-way tie for first place and a tie break scenario.
The draw for the 5th round of the Club Championship has now been made and can be viewed here. Ideally, the top two games, which will decide the Championship, should be played before Christmas. The remaining games don't matter so much, but will still need to be played for rating purposes.
There is the possibility that there could be a 2 or 3 way tie, depending on results, and Tom would like your views on how to decide the winner in this instance. There are several ways we could do this - decide it based on the head to head results of the players concerned, have play-off games between the players concerned or, simplest of all, use the Performance Rating of the players concerned. The player with the highest Performance Rating for the tournament is deemed the winner as their games have been played against stronger opposition. Please let Tom know your thoughts.
Ashby 1 made it 5 wins out of 5 in Division 2 after beating second placed Loughborough 2 by 3.5 - 1.5 last night. This completes their fixtures for 2024 and they will be heading into the New Year with a 2 point lead at the top of the table. They will kick off 2025 against Anstey 2, who have joined Loughborough 2 in joint second place.

In the U1450 Championship, some players are shown as having played less games than others. This is because Darren and Doris Pearce defaulted some of their games. In addition to this, any games involving Colin Marley are not included as he is not a Member of the ECF.
